At Labelnet, we are often asked about the difference between digital and flexographic label printing. Both methods can produce professional, high-quality self-adhesive labels, but the best option will depend on your order quantity, artwork, colour requirements, material and budget. Digital label printing is often suitable for shorter runs, multiple designs and variable information. Flexographic printing is typically more economical for high-volume orders, particularly when the same artwork will be printed repeatedly.

Flexographic label printing

Flexographic printing, commonly known as flexo printing uses flexible plates mounted onto rotating cylinders. Ink is applied to raised areas of each plate and transferred onto the label material at high speed. Although printing plates create initial set-up costs, flexo printing is often more economical for large-volume label orders. It can use CMYK and specially mixed spot colours across a wide range of paper, film and synthetic materials.

Benefits of flexographic printing

  • Cost-effective for high-volume orders
  • Fast production speeds
  • Suitable for many label materials
  • Supports CMYK and spot colours
  • Compatible with specialist inks and finishes

Digital label printing

Digital label printing transfers artwork directly from a digital file without requiring conventional printing plates. This reduces set-up requirements and makes it an efficient option for shorter runs, multiple designs and limited-edition products. Digital presses can reproduce detailed artwork, gradients and photographic images clearly. They commonly use CMYK or an expanded colour range, while Pantone shades can often be closely simulated.

Benefits of digital printing

  • Ideal for short and medium runs
  • High-quality, detailed printing
  • Suitable for multiple design variations
  • Variable data options on compatible presses
  • Lower initial set-up costs
  • Faster artwork changes

Which label printing method is best?

Digital printing may be more suitable for smaller quantities, detailed artwork or several product variations. Flexographic printing can offer better value when producing a large quantity of identical labels. The right choice will also depend on your packaging, label material, required finish and exposure to conditions such as moisture, refrigeration or oils.
