Options for environmentally friendly labels

Labels have always been a challenge to add into the recycling stream as they are often associated with being made from plastic materials, or the adhesive makes it hard to recycle the packaging.

Sustainable label options

When we say ‘sustainable labels’ we generally are talking about any number of eco-friendly labels which have been either recycled or are recyclable (which we will be discussing throughout this blog).

When we are talking about materials which have been ‘sustainably sourced’ this a material which is made through a process that is socially and environmentally responsible. This will therefore minimises pollution, prevent waste and help to make an impact on our environment.

There are many material options to choose from which don’t involve destroying our forests to create a sustainable material. For example:

• Apple Touch – a material made from apple waste and *FSC certified pulp

What are recyclable labels? 

A recyclable label can be attached to a product and put straight into the recycling stream to then be used again, and turned into something new.

• Recyclable PET - We do offer a recyclable label option which can be used on PET packaging (such as drinks bottles and shampoo bottles) and can be put into the PET recycling process as the adhesive instantly dissolve and removes the label from the PET bottle allowing it to continue through its recycling journey without any interference.

All about biodegradable labels

One of the most sustainable options is to use a material which is biodegradable. This means it is made from plant materials and ideal for going onto biodegradable packaging where it can all break down into natural elements, which leaves no toxicity in the soil.

• Sugar cane - Paper made from sugar cane is a popular choice as its 9% sugar cane and 5% hemp which is using a source other than our forests.
  
  

Creating labels from recycled materials

So lastly, we have labels which are made from recycled materials which reduce the consumption of resources, but can only be recycled a limited number of times. Recycling paper decreases the need for using our forests for resources and will help to reduce the environments energy consumption which has a more positive impact.

• Recycled Paper – reduces the use of trees and greenhouse gas emissions
• Recycled PP – an alternative to regular PP which is commonly used to make labels but is reusing and reducing chemical consumption.
