What is hard seltzer?
This sparkling water is combined with alcohol and fruity flavours to create a mouth-watering refreshing summer tipple! The alcohol used within a seltzer can differ but mainly it’s fermented cane sugar, but sometimes malted barley. The seltzer market has a new found popularity right now in the drinks industry with more brands developing their own range with the alcohol content ranging around 4-5% abv.
The new desirable alternative to beer and sugary cocktail which is normally a vegan and gluten free option too.
Is hard seltzer a healthy drink option?
Being packed with water this thirst-quenching drink is certainly a healthier option to a sugary soda or fruity cocktails, but to say it should be part of your daily wellness routine might be a touch too far. The lower the alcohol content in the hard seltzer, the lower the calories with most cans of seltzers being around 80-100 calories, so certainly a healthy option for an alcoholic tipple.
Hard seltzer is usually made from fermented cane sugar which is then mostly converted to alcohol. This is genius as it means the sugar content is kept very low and being in a measured can means you can effectively control your portions.
The fruit juice used to flavour the seltzer doesn’t add any nutritional benefit as such a miniscule amount is used per can to make much difference.
The best thing is the lack of hangovers! Being mixed with water, a seltzer keeps you more hydrated than other alcoholic beverages, and therefore the hangovers really aren’t quite so bad! Winning!
